Selection Process for Replacement Windows

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ENERGY-EFFICIENT WINDOWS?

1. Assess Your Existing Windows

Assess whether your windows should be retrofitted, or replaced. While most new windows have labels indicating their energy properties, such information is not often available for existing windows.

2. Meet the Energy Code and Look for the ENERGY STAR®

Windows must meet the locally applicable energy code requirements. Windows that are ENERGY STAR qualified typically meet or exceed energy code requirements. A home’s climate and location determine the relative importance of heating and cooling energy use, the applicable building energy code requirements, and the qualification criteria for ENERGY STAR windows.

3. Look for Efficient Properties on the NFRC Label

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label is needed for verification of energy code compliance. The NFRC label displays whole-window energy properties and appears on all fenestration products which are part of the ENERGY STAR program and provides the only reliable way to determine the window energy properties and to compare products.

4. Compare Annual Energy Costs for a Typical House

Look at Window Performance Ratings to compare the annual energy performance of different window types and design conditions for a typical house. Find manufacturers who offer windows and skylights within the generic results shown. Learn more about manufacturers’ specific product options.

5. Customize Energy Use for a Specific House

A computer simulation program, such as RESFEN, lets you compare window performance options by calculating performance based on utility rates for your climate, house design options, and window design options.

6. Choose a Durable Product

Make sure the design and workmanship of the window results in a durable product for your specific application. Window warranties can be an indicator of the reliability of the window and its manufacturer. Durability may vary with location. Aspects of window durability that deserve attention are, frame and sashes, insulating glass seals, weatherstripping, and local requirements for structural integrity.

7. Ensure Proper Installation

Proper installation is necessary for optimal window performance, to ensure an airtight fit and avoid water leakage. Always follow manufacturers installation guidelines and use trained professionals for window installation.

5 Things Every Homeowner Should Know About Window Replacement

Replacing windows can be confusing. Homeowners are faced with finding a window that provides durability and the right look for their home. With many options out there, how can customers make an informed decision?

There are five factors that determine the quality and durability of a replacement window. Homeowners should use these factors to evaluate what replacement window is right for them.

Total Performance

Replacement windows should be thermally efficient andadd to the total comfort of your home. Choose a window that meets ENERGY STAR® guidelines and has a .32 or lower U-Value, which measures heat transfer through the window.

Material Strengths

There are a variety of window materials available today; making it complicated for homeowners to understand which materials best suit their needs.

Replacement windows should be low maintenance, durable and continue to look good over time. Wood windows look great but will require much more upkeep over time than fiberglass or vinyl low-maintenance alternatives.

Vinyl, the most frequently used material, has a tendency to warp, fade, expand and contract in extreme temperatures, causing seal failures over time.

A better option is Ultrex®, used by Infinity from Marvin. Ultrex is a pultruded fiberglass material that is eight times stronger than vinyl and three times stronger than wood. Vinyl also expands at seven times the rate of Ultrex, making Ultrex the best choice. Because of its incredible durability and strength, Ultrex fiberglass outperforms all other replacement window materials and will look great for years to come.

Appearance and Design

Advances in technology have made it possible to purchase high performance, long-lasting replacement windows that look great too.

Look for a narrow window profile. The narrower the profile, the more space can be used for glass, letting in more light and enhancing your view. A replacement window should also blend in seamlessly with your home, so choose a window that complements your interior. EverWood®, available exclusively on Infinity replacement windows, looks, feels, paints and stains like wood to match your décor, yet is inorganic and requires no maintenance.

Reliability and Expertise

There are hundreds of window manufacturers in the marketplace today. How do you know who to trust? Will the manufacturer you choose still be in business in 10 years from now if you have a service need?

Choose a window manufacturer who is well-established and has an excellent reputation. Ask around to see who has been satisfied with the installation and service they received when replacing their windows.

Total Value

To ensure the best value, look for a manufacturer known for their reliability and expertise and a product that delivers it all – excellent performance, superior materials and unmatched appearance and design – all at a competitive price.

MEET MARVIN :: MORE THAN JUST WINDOWS

A few months ago we started working with a client who is building her dream house. And, since we started, I can say that the number one conversation we’ve had about the exterior has been windows.

I’ve always pointed out how the right windows really make the space (read just about any Room of the Week post if you don’t believe me!) and so it was only fitting that I get to visit the Marvin Windows & Doors headquarters in Warroad, Minnesota with ELLE DECOR and House Beautiful a few months back to experience the process they go through to make their stunning windows and doors…

You know when people are passionate about what they do, it makes you passionate about what they do? Well, if I thought I had a thing for windows before, now I’m really in love. And how could you not be, with a company that can make stunning custom pieces for historical renovations…

As well as everyday windows that are practical, functional, and of the highest quality…

But it wasn’t just the product I was impressed with – everything from green practices (exceptional!) to their company culture (it’s basically one big family) was admirable. We toured the Marvin museum which gave us insight into how the company has basically built the town of Warroad, and does so much more to take care of their own. They are also currently operated by the 4th generation of Marvin family members – also impressive – and speak so much to their dedication to their community.

And then, of course, there’s the biggest test. Would I recommend them to my client? Heck yeah.

Cheat Sheet for window replacement

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SHOPPED FOR WINDOWS?

When was the last time you shopped for windows? Exactly. It doesn’t really happen very often. It’s not like shopping for a pair of shoes, so we feel your aggravation. It’s not cheap, it takes time, and there are a lot of window styles to choose from. The whole process can be a pain.

But not anymore. Let’s break down the most popular types of windows out there and then you’ll be able to speak the language.

Single & Double Hung Windows

What in the world is a single or double hung window? First of all, they’re uber popular. You see these guys on a lot of homes. Single hungs can be raised from the bottom, and double hung windows can be raised from the bottom as well as lowered from the top. And on a double hung, you can tilt the window in for easy cleaning.

Casement Windows

Ever heard of this window? Casement windows are a great option for hard to reach areas in your home because you can reach up and just crank the handle to open or close the window.

Awning Windows

These windows are hinged at the top and open outward. They provide additional air flow to a room. Another nice thing about this style of window is if it’s drizzling outside, but still warm, you can open the window and the rain will run off. You will get some water in the house if it’s pouring, but a nice light spring rain can easily be enjoyed with these kinds of windows.

Slider Windows

Sliders glide open and provide a wide view of your outside landscape. These windows also tilt in for easy cleaning.

Bay & Bow Windows

Now we’re talking serious style. A bay or bow window creates dimension. On the outside, your home will have a posh, upscale look. On the inside, you will create additional seating and a perfect lounging area to read a book or just enjoy the view.

Picture & Geometric Windows

These windows are the most energy efficient out of all windows because, well, you can’t open them. They provide a beautiful view to the outside, but, because they’re installed without any operating mechanisms, you don’t have to worry about accidentally leaving the window open. They also can be completely customized can fit any space in your home.

Garden Windows

These windows are absolutely gorgeous. You’ve probably seen them before, but just didn’t know their name (until now). These windows let in a lot of light and can come with casements on the side that to provide airflow to any plants or flowers. They really do add beauty to your home.

You know the lingo…now what?

Think Outside the Window

So your son or daughter really got a hold of that ball and smashed your window. Well, he or she may have done you a favor. After all, just because you need to replace a double hung window does not mean you have to get that same window. Now you have the opportunity to think outside your current window style and create a new look for your home. Maybe now you’ll want to buy a bay window. Or, if you’re replacing a kitchen window, you could get a garden window.

Why Care?

Because unlike most other home purchases, a window makes your house look beautiful on the outside, and on the inside. It’s a win/win. New windows also increase your energy efficiency and raise the value of your home. Any Realtor will tell you new windows on a house add instant curb appeal and are attractive to a potential buyer.

When Should I Buy?

Think it’s too cold to buy windows? Not true! You can purchase windows at any time. In the spring, summer, fall or winter. If it’s cold, your contractor will be sure to shut the door to minimize air flow through the house. They’ll also replace one window at a time, so there won’t be several open holes in your home all at once.

Where Should I Buy?

Um, a no brainer. Simonton! We have been making homes beautiful since 1946. A lot of window companies come and go, but because our product is high-quality it’s easy for us to stand behind our windows. Plus we have an incredible warranty to prove it. In addition, our windows are put through rigorous testing to ensure you’re only getting the best. And did you know we’re award winning? This year, Consumer Reports rated our Pro-Finish Contractor the #1 vinyl double hung window. Talk about an amazing compliment.

We hope you find the perfect window for you! And if you ever have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at social@simonton.com. We’re here to help.
