Colorado Garden and Home Show offers a taste of spring in Denver

At the 56th annual Colorado Garden and Home Show, Feb. 7 – 15, hydrants, water features and foliage celebrate the history of firefighting. Light up your garden with the 5,500-square-foot “Fire & Flowers” entry garden, featuring fire trucks, hydrant water features, ladders and more, designed in collaboration with the Denver Firefighter’s Museum (denverfirefightersmuseum.org).

“This show gives people a taste of spring in February, a way to enjoy flowers while outside we’re enjoying the cold,” said Jim Fricke, executive director of The Colorado Garden Foundation, a nonprofit that produces the event. A purchase for your house, whether home improvement, landscaping or décor, is personal and the show is a great way to comparison shop by meeting representatives from the companies and looking at the products, he said.

Visitors to the region’s largest home and landscape show will be treated to lush gardens, do-it-yourself tips and expert companies ready to help you with home improvement projects. In the entry garden, check out the three antique fire trucks — one which kids can climb and explore. Firefighters and museum volunteers are ready to teach you about the profession and its impact on Denver.

Garden after garden fill the 400,000-square foot hall, including this year’s display by the Denver Botanic Gardens. Inspired by Bill Laws’ book, “Fifty Plants that Changed the Course of History,” the garden is filled with plants that left an indelible mark on human history: coffee, agave, banana, black pepper, cacao, coconut, ginger, lemon, orange, papaya, pineapple and vanilla orchid. The garden adopts a Victorian theme in a historical conservatory setting.

If you’re looking for innovative ways to improve your home’s value, chances are one of the 600 companies from 25 states and Canada can help. They’ll introduce new technologies and trends in landscaping, gardening, energy-efficient heating and cooling products, window treatments, siding, flooring, lighting, indoor and outdoor fireplaces — in short, everything you need for remodeling kitchens, getting new roofing or redoing a bathroom.

Environmentally savvy consumers searching for sustainable landscapes will thrill to the Autumn Gold Landscaping garden, featuring techniques to fit any size landscape. But the real treat is what’s nestled inside the display: a home from Rhino Cubed, the Boulder-based company producing homes from old shipping containers. The petite spaces are ideal for living off the grid or using as a writer’s or artist’s sanctuary.

Look for the Colorado State University Extension booth with the theme “Solutions for common landscape problems in Colorado.” Learn to tell the difference between Lilac/Ash Borer and the devastating Emerald Ash Borer, and see the current distribution of Emerald Ash Borer in Colorado. Alternative trees to replace ash will be shown along with woody plants for smaller landscapes. CSU “Best Of” annuals will be highlighted along with some Plant Select plants.

Enter to win a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, an all-wheel drive vehicle sponsored by the Colorado Garden Foundation. Help area food banks and get $2 off admission by bringing and donating a nonperishable food item to the ticket window at the Colorado Convention Center. All of the food gathered will be distributed to local area food banks (discount is not good with any other offer).
