In the the Netherlands, there is a town where the streets are made of water

Giethoorn, Holland: Magical Little Town

There are places in this world that are so surreal and beautiful that when you first see photos of them, you naturally assume they must be from a movie set.  Giethoorn is a mostly car-free village in the northeastern Dutch province of Overijssel.  But while the tiny town of Giethoorn in northern Holland may look like it was built for a film based on a children’s fairytale, this enchanted neighborhood that’s built upon a network of narrow canals is completely real.

Tranquil Village

We have seen some neat homes in our industry, but nothing like the town of Giethoorn.  It is the kind of picturesque village most people can only dream of. Even its website says that “the loudest sound you can normally hear is the quacking of a duck or the noise made by other birds .”

Beautiful Architecture  and Thatch Roofed Houses

Tourists still flock to see the farmhouses along the waterways. We particularly enjoy the variety of windows in the home.

The Venice of the North

Indulge in the photos, close your eyes, and imagine yourself drifting gently past thatched-roof cottages and wooden bridges, under the soft rays of the early morning sun.

Let’s take a moment and appreciate the beauty and architecture of the waterways in Gierthoorn.   It truly is an inspiration.
